Curiosidades: se cambió su apellido adoptando el nombre del poeta Dylan Thomas. Le descubrió el cazatalentos John Hammond Jnr., el mismo que descubrió a Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen y George Benson. En abril y mayo de 1965 el director de cine D.A. Pennebaker siguió su gira por Gran Bretaña grabando el documental 'Don't look back'. A finales de 1966 editó el libro de reflexiones 'Tarantula'. Entre 1965 y principios de la década de los setenta estuvo acompañado del grupo The Band formado por Robbie Roberton a la guitarra, Richard Manuel al piano, Garth Hudson al órgano, Rick Danko al bajo, y Levon Helm a la batería. En agosto de 1969 actuó en el Festival de la Isla de Wight, tres años más tarde estuvo presente en el Concierto por Bangladesh, y en julio de 1985 actuó en Live Aid. En 1973 participó en la película 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid' de Sam Peckinpah donde cantó 'Knockin' on heaven's door', y cinco años más tarde participó en la cinta 'Hearts of stone' de Richard Marquand. En 1988 formó junto a Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty y Jeff Lyne el grupo Traveling Wilburys con los cuales editó dos álbums 'Volume one' y 'Volume three' (sin Roy Orbison).
