En 1976 ofreció un tributo a Duke Ellington en el tema 'Sir Duke' del disco 'Songs in the key of life', y cuatro años más tarde, compuso un canción de tributo a Martin Luther King, 'Happy birthday' en su disco 'Hotter than july'. Ha colaborado en multitud de canciones: con Paul McCartney escribiendo y cantando 'Ebony and ivory'; tocando la armónica en el tema 'Brand new day' de Sting; en 'There must be an angel' de Eurythmics; o con Dionne Warwick en 'That's what friends are for'.
